Andrew has had, as he states, a couple bad axle experiences. From my perspective, I've gone the axle replacement route half a dozen times and have never had a failure of the axle. I certainly believe Andrew's horror stories, and wonder if the source of the part can be a factor. IIRC, Andrew's axle problems are for a couple of non-Saab cars (is that right, Andrew?).
I've not bought axles from the big chains, always from either a site sponsor here or from a reputable foreign parts supplier locally. Again, never any problems.
I've done both the boot replacement and the joint replacement, and am practiced enough at both to say that I consider axle replacement easier. You have to disassemble all the same stuff to get the CV joint off an axle AND to replace the axle. The additional work involved in axle removal is the fiddly process of removing the wheel well liner, and unclipping the inner driver. That's it -- although that liner can be a pain.
