To do the CV boot replacement, you need to completely disassemble the CV joint to clean it out properly, and if you've never done it before, might run into some problems getting it apart and back together. You have to observe the orientation of the races and the way the inner and outer need to tilt to get the balls out, and it could be a bit tricky if you lose track. There's more finesse to it than going the whole axle replacement route, but if you're not curious about how the thing works so much as just getting it back on road again, just get the whole axle. I personally always opted for the boot, myself. I find it therapeutic; it's a bit like playing with mud pies, with all the grease- The one time I decided to try a new axle was when I thought the existing joint seemed a bit stiff- the replacement axle I got from AZ was worse, so I ended up returning it and sticking with the original one.
