I got it to use with an automatic transmission. I removed a manual transmission (both from 9k's) before without it, and wished at the time that I did have one.
It does have a fairly low profile, which made it fairly easy to get it in. The selling point for me was that purchasing it equaled the price of two rentals. I've already made that up, and will be using it again soon to replace a clutch.
Personally, I see it as much safer then an adaptor on a floor jack (I also explored this possibility), simply because it spreads the weight out over a larger area rather then the 3" circle you get from a floor jack.
Works great for me. And have a TON of fun on your new project.
BTW, do you still have the brake accumulator from your parts car? I would be interested in it.
