Hello everyone,
This is an update to my post several days ago about finding a large puddle of fluid in my driveway.
I confirmed that the transmission is leaking, which was my worst fear. This will be the 3rd manual tranny in my car since it was converted to manual. However, this one lasted the longest! ;)
they all started out being erikson rebuilt, the first two being defective or installed wrong, doesn't really matter they were no good for whatever reason.
Maybe that tells me something about erikson trannys, or the shop i went to?
either way, my back is up against a wall.
I've spent thousands and thousands in recent years on this car, i'm not sure if i can stomache replacing the tranny again.
The engine has been fully rebuilt, and has about 20,000 miles on it right now, at the absolute most. Suspension, brakes, exhaust, flywheel, clutch, bushings... all are just as young as the engine.
the tranny itself was that young.
I'm confused as to why this is happeneing again?
Could it have been from bottoming out somewhere?
In my last post i had described the dipstick as readin low, or nothing... but i wasn't sure if that was correct.
This morning i checked it (i haven't been driving it in many days now) and it was bone dry.
I put a big sheet of cardboard underneath it, on a flat part of my driveway, got my long funnel out, and poured in one bottle of 10w-40.
I waited a minute or two, looked under the car, and nothing had leaked out immediately.
Then i poured in a second bottle, so 2 quarts total, and waited a few minutes, no leaks yet.
I left the dipstick off the trans, so the fill hole was open, then I walked away from the car for maybe 5 minutes.
when i came back, i looked at the cardboard under the car, and sure enough,
just about every last drop that i had poured in, had come back out.
The leak itself comes from the center of the engine compartment, pretty much straight down onto the pavement. Is this what they call the "main seal"???
The leak didn't appear to be coming from the bottom of the car or transmission, it appeared to be coming from a little ways up from the ground, i don't have a lift or any means of raising my car up, and it's lowered, so i wasn't able to get under it and look.
I guess i should bring it to a shop and have them diagnose the leak...
I drove the car for months, suspecting it had a leak, or that it was low... putting in fluid from time to time...
is it possible that this is replaceable / fixable and the tranmission is still ok?
what are some possible causes of this?
what should i do?
