I was hoping to get some insight as to why i've had so many problems with transmissions...
so JEM,
as the story goes...
I bought this car as an automatic, year and years ago...
The car was very cheap, only 2 grand, and it had only 92,000 miles on it.
The interior and exterior were in near perfect condition, and mechanically it was very sound.
It had only one owner, an elderly college professor, and was traded to a local saab mechanic who worked at a saab dealership, who spruced it up and had it for sale on his front lawn... which is where i saw it.
I fell in love with it, having owned an 87 900S that was totaled months earlier. I bought it with the COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING that the auto trans WILL fail in the near future, as it was having problems shifting into drive, and changing gears, even while i test drove it.
I bought it with the sole intention of converting it to a 5-speed at some point in the future of my owning the car, however i thought the auto tranny would have lasted longer than it did. It dies at 98,000 miles... leaving me with the option of coverting it. all or nothing it was...
It was a lengthy process, to say the least, which in fact i had NOTHING to do with, other than writing checks.
All i can tell you about it is, the people doing the swap were worthy mechanics, and i trust them as people, but it became clear that they did not know everything about doing a swap.
I beleive that they got this transmission "right", and i'm hoping that the problems i am having now are unrelated to any of the work that was done years ago.
It's been a working 5-speed for the last 20,000 miles, and i've had no problems drivetrain related in a long time.
The first transmission had a leaking case... which was under warranty, and got replaced for free.
The second i think i may have had a hand in breaking... just by beating on it, but since it was under warranty, whatever happened to it it was replaced again for free.
The tranny that is leaking in my driveway now is the third replacement, IIRC...
i might be delusional and this could only be the 2nd still...
i don't know, we're talking like 5 years ago...
i'd have to pull out all my paperwork, but that would not help this situation i'm having right now...
it's all water over the dam.
I've had 3 saab dealerships, and over 3 independent saab mechanics perform major work on the car, and none of them have ever said anything wasn't put together properly...
Including JAK himself... who i drove to North carolina and back to see, with this current transmission, no problems discovered or experienced then.
Even if the prior mechanic is to blame, and every mechanic i've seen since him has missed findind a mis-alignment problem... then the original warranty on parts and labor has LONG been passed... and i'm still right where i left off...
thank you for the thought though...
