sponsors to the list of things others have talked about. My alternator went out in Nebraska. If I had a VR, I could have changed it myself in the rest stop lot. Instead, I paid$100 to have the car towed into town. A replacement alternator was $800+ and 3 days away. I got the battery recharged, then limped along until I was convinced a reasonable alternator was not available in Nebraska. A new Energizer battery from a local Walmart got me into Denver where a local rebuilder sold me a rebuilt alt for $75.
Armed with site sponsor #s you are at best a day away from a reasonably priced part. Do the preventive stuff, and a spare DI is not a bad idea, but you could carry a lot of parts and still not have the one you need.
