Similar story... I bought my car about 400 miles from home. When I was driving it home, it stopped charging. With about 300 miles left I definitely didn't want to get it towed. I took a motel so I wouldn't have to drive in the dark, and spent the evening hooking up four car batteries that I bought at walmart that evening. I also bought an extension cord, stripped it and wired all the batteries to the car battery. The batteries got me home, and the EDU reported over 12 volts even after driving the remaining 300 miles of the trip- I guess I went overboard. Then I just took the batteries back to my local walmart for a full refund! I did charge them before i took them back over of course.
The previous owner told me he had just replaced the voltage regulator. I removed it, and it turned out to be some generic brand. I popped in a used Bosch one from my '85 900 and all is well 4 months later.
