Ask me how many tensioner shocks I've destroyed by forgetting to pre-loosen the bolt WITH the belt still on FIRST to prevent tensioner shock destruction.
Then, ask me how long I've driven on the broken ones before finally getting around to replacing them? Answer: thousands upon thousands. I just finally replaced a broken one over the weekend, but only because I intend to sell the car (anyone looking for a nice 93 CDE turbo??).
The spring is what provides the tension; the shock valving is there to even out any tendencies to bounce around when the AC compressor kicks in, etc. I've never had any problems from a bad shock, but of course it's nice to have the peace of mind and I'd put a good one in there next time you have cause to take those bits apart.
Short answer is not to worry too much about it. Just shove it back together and make sure everything looks like it's working when you start the car back up.
