There one choice I've been toying with myself but haven't had the courage to do yet: buy a classic. For 10 grand or so, you can get a fun, head-turning, unique car that definitely won't lose value in the long or short term. I'm thinking late '60s Alfas, maybe a Porsche 912, old Mercedes or Jags though the XKE's are out of sight. (But come down to it, if you had $45K to spend, which would you rather have, a pristine XKE convertible or a new Lexus something or other?) Don't know if this sort of thing meets your needs at all, but a classic does solve several car-problems at once. Wouldn't it be great to sell a car for a few thousand more than you bought it for after having driven it 10 years? Food for thought, anyway.
Sorry about your loss.
