If you want reliability you cant go past a toyota (or lexus) or a suburu, in my experience more reliable than a 9000, and (at least in Australia) much less expensive to keep.
As far as fun to drive, id be staying away from front wheel drive, as much as i love my 9kt i just cant get used to the FWD, id definatly go for a RWD or even better an AWD!
WRX's are super fun to drive and their traction from a standing start is amazing.
Im not sure if you get toyota soarer's over there, not sure what their equivalent lexus model designation is, but they are a nice car, you can either get the 4lt v8 or the twin turbo 2.5lt i6, id go the twin turbo personally. They are RWD and also very nice to drive.
The one thing you will miss out on in buying a japanese car is that their interiors are definatly not up to saab standard, but in my opinion the added performance and reliability is worth the lack of extra luxuries.
And if all else fails come back to the good old 9kt, they may not have the reliability of a jap car or the performance of a WRX, but they are a beautiful car inside and out.
