Well Julia,
If it makes you feel any better you are not alone with this problem.
I searched this site yesterday to get some insight to my "check engine light, rough running, have to put my foot yo the floor to run, and yes, my airconditioner stopped working" too!!
I have some experience nursing my 93' CSE turbo from the clutches of death through out the years. This site has been invaluable for advice and would have given up long ago without them, and Eeuroparts for parts have been great.
Not to detract from your personal "cause and effect" situation, but I will share my personal experience.
1-I have had my DI cassette replaced in March this year and back in 1996 under warrantee and none of the symptoms shown either time exist now. This does not smell like a DI problem to me based on my personal experience.
2-When you turn off the ignition and restart the car it runs fine again until the next occurance. Sometimes after running ok the "check engine light" will go out, sometimes not. DI cassettes die and stay dead, they do not "re-set".
3-During one of these run rough sessions I quickly opened the hood and realized the electric clutch on the air conditioning compressor had disengaged rendering the air conditioning inoperative. The engine continued to run rough at about 400 RPM. Perhaps the clutch on the compressor is set to disengage at a low RPM, hence no air?
4-We are in the middle of a heat wave (Toronto) and the engine is running extreemly hot, about 1/4 of an inch away from the red zone on the temp gauge. Recently I have performed a complete cooling system check and repair, new cabin fan, 80deg thermostat, replacement of fan thermoswitch, collant and hoses.
lets see what suggestions come back!
