YES, go for the SAAB.
A few years ago, my wife and I had a 95 Legacy Wagon that we bought for the AWD for Massachusetts winters, and for practicality. At the time it was our only all-year car (BMW conv and 442 conv). The beemer left the next summer to a new home, and we were stuck sharing a car. So, having missed my old 900S for several years, I bought a 90 9000S with 193K miles for $1050.
The step up was like moving from the street to the penthouse (from the 900S as well, except for styling).
As soon as my wife drove it, she was ready to sell the Subaru and get herself one.
So, we bought her a 92 9000S for $2200 with 133K miles, and sold the Subaru for $4700.
And never looked back.
#1 Comfort of seats is FAR SUPERIOR, as well as safety, durability, solid feeling, feeling of wealth/quality, handling.
Our Subaru was a good car (sans all the engine seals which failed), and before I had a routine timing belt change, it was getting 34 mpg on the highway, but there is NO COMPARISON between a Saab and a Subaru.
Saab is much nicer car, if you don't mind giving up AWD.
Just find a good independent mech if you don't like Do it Yourself jobs, and stay tuned on this board to save yourself $1000's when odd little things go wrong, or serious things go wrong (like knowing to get a new DI Cassette if the one on the car is old and save the old DI Cassette as a spare).
Good luck.
