First, I feel your pain. I have a daughter in a 9K, too. And even tho I DIY, I still wonder what repair comes next.

Anyway, with the engine replaced you should be able to sell it for a good bit more than $2100, especially with the other stuff you've done. But if you sell it and buy her another car, you are now facing another set of unknowns--and possibly exhaust, brakes, etc., all of which can cost a few bucks. Suppose you get $3k for this car w/ the engine swapped. Then you spend that on an econobox. But in 3 months that car needs tires or brakes, or a muffler or water pump.... The point is you're gonna spend $$ on any used car.

I bought a '95 CS for my daughter 8 months ago and put about a grand into it, covered most of the stuff that's likely to die and that needed doing (brakes, exhaust, engine mounts, etc). But if her engine or tranny went south I'd get it fixed because the rest of the car is sound and I know what's up with it. Not so on the used whatever I'd have to find to replace it.

As for reliability, you may have reached the point where a lot of the typical stuff that plagues 9Ks and also the "any car" items are done. So reliability is swinging in your favor (altho it may not seem like that!).
With respect to fuel economy, what are you looking for? A 9K should get reasonable mileage 20-24 in local driving. If you get her an econobox it really won't be all that much better, and she loses the safety factor.

Just stuff to think about.
