I had problems with the CD player in the HK system in my 95 CSE and just ended up getting a used one from a junkyard instead of redoing the whole setup. Since you don't have the HK (or the amp that goes with it) you wont have any problem switching the factory hu/cd player for a good aftermarket one.

Nakamichi's are excellent hu's for sq, factory looks and functionality. The CD-400 in particular has green, amber, or green/amber selectable lights that match the 9000's interior almost perfectly. The hu is easy to install, just with a 9k you'll never find a wiring harness...so be prepared to hardwire it. I used to have a pic of a Nak CD-400 installed in a 9k Aero but can't seem to find it at the moment. Alternatives I would suggest are Eclipse (excellent SQ, but can be pricey) or Alpine (again good SQ, but can get pricey). Eclipse will be simpler in appearance, while Alpine's tend to have more bells and whistles like motorized faceplates and things of that sort.
