I have the black impact socket, but broke two 3/4" breaker bars trying to get the nut off. The part where it goes into the socket just sheared off. The drilling sounds like it would work, but damn, what a pain, and the added stress of possibly screwing up the threads on the axle. I've already got a replacement nut, so I'm not worried about chiseling the old one in half if I choose to go the drill route.
It would just be so much easier if I could get a local mechanic to loosen it with an impact wrench and then tighten it up when I'm done. Gone are the days of your local garage helping you out when you're in a bind...
