It is risky.
saabnet listings are probably the safest bet for long distance
i did an online auction site purchase and had it shipped for $500 because i was afraid to buy a 70K mile 93 9000 with no service history and a gas leak and a color i wasn't crazy about. that was probably a great car.
the one i got, it is a beautiful car. seller mistated mileage by at least 7K miles if i recall he said 140K and it had 147K when i took delivery...
had many new parts he said it had, but immediately upon driving the car, i noticed things were wrong, engine would occasionally misfire, trans slipped - trans fluid was almost black (seller stated car had rebuilt tranny at 120K - never gave me receipt for that). i replaced fluid and tranny has been fine, shifting wise, for 16K miles but a bad ground between tranny and body caused an arcing problem that has resulted in tranny pump wearing... so now i'm replacing tranny, though car drives fine.
engine missing turned out to be failing di cassette.
car needed rear brakes. new exhaust had rusted prematurely from michigan winters, so i swapped my new exhaust from my 92 9000 (which is now parted into many pieces).
i would do it again, under the right circumstances, because i've learned a little hard work and some $ can fix almost anything, BUT...
had i looked at my car before buying, i would not have purchased it.
the two 9000s i looked at before buying came from New England (MA and CT) and I got great deals and put hardly any money into them and got tens of thousands of miles virtualy trouble free.
if you are going to go east coast, BUY Connecticut - they don't use road salt. Buy from Southern CT (Fairfield, Stamford, Westport areas) where the area is fairly wealthy and cars are well cared for by local saab dealers and independent saab mechanics.
when i lived in CT, a friend from MA drove down and we spent the weekend driving around looking at 9000s, and then he bought the nicest one and drove it back to MA. Got a good couple years out of it relatively trouble free before selling to buy newer saab.
good luck
aaron
