My experience with a wrecked 94cs two Decembers ago is to let them total it. You don't even have to buy it back. It costs the insurance company money to come to your house to tow and dispose of it. They never did mine and I dispose of it myself stripping many parts first.
The insurance company will low ball you that is for sure. You need to be patient and persistent in dealing with them. The process may take a month or two, maybe longer.
In my case the insurance company (third party because I only have liability) won't even admit fault of their insured. The police officer at the scene issued a summons to my opponent. Still The insurance claimed I am as much at fault as my opponent so I will get nothing. Even after the the court procession which completed vindicated me the insurance would still try to get away with minimal or no compensation. I ended up settling with 85% of the market value of the car. The market value is determined by classified ad listings in your area of the same model year, make and model.
Check with the insurance regulatory arm in your State government. You can get them involved in arbitration if there is a dispute between you and the insurance company which cannot be resolved. I threatened arbitration, got the process started and withdrew after finally settling with the insurance.
