Yes Rob,you can look at the motor and see if it's clean or gunked/caked up with oil which can seep out of the area where the head meets the block. There are two mating surfaces, one between the top black cam cover to head and then the head portion is approx 4-5 inches and then another mating to the block/bottom portion of the motor.Sandwiched between the head and block is the head gasket.these gaskets are a normal maintainence item on these cars due to the fact that the head is Aluminum and the block is steel. Both materials expand and contract at different rates which causes the head gasket to be subjected to a constant grinding action. The wear can be accelerated by not allowing the car to come up to operating temp before being driven hard and driving gently until that time.Any time after 100k it can be time for a head gasket but I suppose there are cars out there with much higher miles and still have the original gasket in there. The job is only a gasket replacement it's just a labor intensive one to get to it.These cars have timing chains which with regular oil changes last forever.Maintainence history is a critical factor in a purchase. Also I should mention White smoke out the exhaust is a sign and not a good one because that means coolant is getting in the combustion chamber and you are then damaging the cylinder walls.Early non-serious signs of head gasket renewal can also be a positive and used as a bargaining tool. These are very good cars and I would welcome the opportunity to be able to look at a '98 even if it did need a head gasket.Let me reemphasize that '98's are the most desireable years. So go and beat up that ford dealer and get that car for as low as you can and you will have a forever car.I envy you.Let me know how you make out.Don
