1985-1998 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I'm back with an update on my quest for a 9000. To recap, it's a 1998 9000 CSE with 129 k miles, automatic in fine body and interior condition. The Ford dealer where it lives is asking $5900.00. The salesman let me take it out for a couple of hours, and I thought it drove pretty nice. Mind you, I now drive a slightly rusty and rough riding 1993 900S with 215k miles, so anything would be an improvement in that department.
So I took it to my local Saab dealer and gave them $97.00 for 27-point used car inspection. I got a little one-on-one with the mechanic and he told me pretty much what you folks have been saying about the car. Durable but expensive to fix.
The specifics on this car's problems as uncovered by this mechanic are in his order are:
DI Cassette and plugs $675 parts and labor
Motor mount $280.00 p & l
Exhaust intermediate pipe and center muffler $675.00
Power steering hose $275.00
Air intake tube (it has a weld in it now) $95.00
He said the head gasket looked like it may be leaking a little but he couldn't tell for positive because he didn't pressure test it and the engine had been nicely detailed. He said it may or may not be a problem.
Head gasket (starting at) $1400.00 (if it needs it)
Brakes, tires OK. He said the trans fluid looked fine and he didn't comment on the trans after he drove it.
I realize that I don't need to get s Saab dealer exhaust. I have a local shop that has done a lot of good and reasonably priced work on my 900. And the air intake tube with a weld in it doesn't bother me. Obviously, the Saab dealer charges more to do the work because they use no aftermarket parts and attempt to bring the car as close to new as humanly possible.
I took the car back to the Ford dealer and offered the guy $4000.00 (from $5995.00). He talked with his boss who said that they would like to get $4995.00. We agreed to talk again tomorrow and parted ways.
I'm sure they'll come down more on the price when we talk again. What do you think?
Opinions please.
Thanks,
Rob
