long response- How could I have made this mistake!? Thanks again SWEDECAR.
My logic (albeit naive) was that since both systems worked the same way that they can be bled with the same method. I did not take into effect the 2 completely differently molded plastic reservoirs. In theory a both systems are bled the same method but the method tolerances are different.
I think I know why the newer style reservoir has such a lower tolerance for a minimum fluid level. Looking into the reservoir I noticed a small high baffled sub-reservoir for the clutch master feed hose nipple.
I believe it's intentionally engineered to allow air to more easily enter the clutch hydraulic system than the older setup during the same routine bleeding procedure.
The 2nd generation master cylinder was relocated to the interior directly by the pedal. If replacing it, disconnecting the feed line risks leaking brake fluid on your carpet. The earlier (my 1987) style had the vertical firewall mounted (and fed) master cylinder. I could replace it in 5 minutes without spilling a drop.
R/R the interior master is a much cleaner job if there were an easy way to quickly purge/dry the system of all fluid. Here's an idea- keep bleeding it!
i've been putting too much thought into this
