Hi guys, I haven't posted for ages, been too involved in my other passion -restoring my Lambretta. However, my Saab (1996 9000 CS LPT converted to FPT)has noticed my interest in the older woman - Lambretta is 48 years old :-) and has started to get even.

She has started to make a noise that sounds exactly like out of adjustment tappets on an old Ford ("tickytickyticky") until the engine is fully up to temperature. While engine is still warming up I can hear the noise as I pull away from lights. It varies with engine speed, not road speed and it sounds louder when accelerating, ie the noise is reduced when I back off the throttle. I cannot hear the noise when idling, although I have to say she is a bit rattly when idling (does not sound like a bucket of spanners, just noticeable when I've got my head in the engine, but all my 9000s have sounded like that). I've checked engine oil although full flush and filter change only 1000 miles ago, still looks fine and did not needing topping up. Ditto with Auto tranny oil.

Once car is fully warmed so noise has gone, she goes fine, boosts well, no problem. (she probably would boost well with the noise while it is warming but I didn't have the heart to test it with the scary noise going on)

My spider sense tells me that if the problem is not oil starvation to the tappets (although I would not know where to start to confirm that?), then maybe something not obvious and not necessarily engine internal, like water pump maybe?

Any one had anything similar, is it bad?

Regards to all

Andy (West London)
