Thanks for all your comments guys, here's some resposes and further thoughts:
Yeofeng, I read on other posts that the hydraulic lifters can take up to 15 mins to bring the oil up, but the fact that it suddenly started making the noise - and for so long - scared me. I drive home for lunch and even starting the car after lunch still makes the noise until the temp gauge shows fully warmed up, so if it was the lifters I would have thought they would have enough residual oil remaining from when I got home 30 mins before, surely?
Turbo, your suggeston re the exhaust manifold is intriging as I have had a "turbo whistle" (leaking joint at turbo/exhaust manifold)for the last couple of months, more noticeable when cold, so it could well be related to that I wonder. At my last MOT they said they had to weld up the exhaust manifold a little, but it didn't seem to stop the whistle, so I guess they just didn't do it enough, so I will pursue that line of investigation.
Street, you asked what oil I run, I use semi-synthetic 15W-40. I did not use flushing oil, I did a normal oil change + filter, then a week later, I changed it again. That was in late feb.
Chaz and 2_Terry, yes it is probably time to have the chain/tensioner etc done but I would do that to make the engine quieter when idling as it is a little rattly, but I imagine that a worn chain/tensioner would always be noisy, rather than only be noisy until the engine is fully hot.
I forgot to mention previously, the car has just clicked its odometer over the 183,000 mile mark, officially the highest mileage Saab I have owned!
I'll check out the manifold and see if I can resolve and I'll post results.
Many thanks guys, at least it doesn't sound like something expensive about to let go! :-)
Kind regards to you all
Andy (West London)
