There are as many here who hate the 9000 automatic as those who say it's OK.
The autobox in the 9Ks is not the most robust, but they actually work pretty well. I have a '95 CS with automatic (daughter's) and a '96 CSE 5 speed. The difference in performance is quite dramatic, but that's mostly the extra power and torque of the full pressure turbo in the CSE. It still goes fine and is pretty responsive for a 3200 lb car with only 170 HP. If you get a CS and want more poke you can upgrade the car to full pressure easily enough.
With the autobox you have to make sure the fluid is changed regularly. You can't drain the torque converter, so you have to do multiple drains and fills to change all the fluid, or just drain every 5K miles or so (when you do oil) and the new stuff will mix with the old and you should be OK. But to start with a new-to-you car, do a full flush so you have fresh fluid.
There are other issues, like the governor seals, which can be done easily and cheaply. Search here for info.
And FWIW, a rebuilt trans from Erikkson (the top place for these trannies) runs about $1800-ish (last I heard). Used ones are available from a number of sources.
Remember this: very few makes or models these days have auto trannies that really last. Many go south around 100-120K miles, some far sooner. The one in the 9000 is simply OK, but you have to take care of it.
Just my $0.02.
