Having owned and driven both vehicles, here is my input.....
1996 Aero, automatic = Love the car. Handles great, its easy to drive, has all the treats you come to love in an Aero. Performance is okay in comparison to other 4 cylinder cars, but in comparison to a 5-speed Aero, its a FAR second place. If you were to drive the car like you stole it, and really keep it in the revs by beating and manually shifting it, you'll get a grin on your face, but for normal everyday driving, it really doesn't cut the mustard. My #1 complaint (aside from the general "weakness" of the tranny) is that the shift from first to second happens too quickly. Flooring it out of a stop sign creates a nice pull through first, but 2nd snaps in very quickly, and the car bogs down. You can manually shift from 1-to-2 at 5-6k and things will be fine and dandy, but 9 times out of 10, the car will hit 3500rpm then kick down to 1800-2000rpm in 2nd, and there just isn't enough spool to keep things moving. For a "driver", they are great.
1993 Aero 5-speed....this car had a 3" JT downpipe and 3" cat, and was an absolute rocket. You could push the car as hard as you wanted to and it just wanted more. The difference in the top end rush of the 5-speed Aero's TD04 turbo and the automatic Aero's T25 is large. The TD04 loves high revs and really doesn't disappoint.
Either find a cheep 5-speed Aero eventually, or get a 5-speed CS/CSE and "Aero-ize" it.
