Hi Ari, thanks for taking a look at this one. I've found your posts on here invaluable.
As for the thermostat: no, it hasn't been replaced, but I'm sure it's not stuck open. After only 5 minutes of driving it doesn't go far past the cold blue line, but ten minutes of stop-and-go driving will take it up to the 9-o'clock position or higher. Often in excessive stop-and-go on a reasonably warm day it'll go to 10 or 10:30 but I've read that the 94's gauges are more "expressive" and this isn't anything to worry about.
Should I go ahead and get that replaced? Cost estimate? Will it require another coolant flush? Almost 122k on the car, if that's a question.
When investigating this problem, I opened up the cabin air temp sensor and found that the previous owner had lovingly kept the fan from spinning using a rolled up piece of paper. After removing it, the horrible noise it made showed me why. But before recently the car didn't seem to have much trouble at all modulating the heat, and the sensor was stuck (and the thermoresistor part destroyed) all this time. I've owned the car for about a year now, including a full winter season.
I replaced it with a junkyard one from a 97 CSE that does indeed spin, as I can feel it and hear it after the car is off.
If the heater flap actuator isn't working, will that show up as an ACC fault? Also, when the ACC is off and the vents are open, cold air from the outside is sent through the vents unless they're closed. Is this normal? Finally, could something done by the guys who did the coolant flush have screwed up the heating conduit?
