Let's assume you can get the tranny done for $1500. It may hit $2K all-up, all-in, but let's go with $1500. Then you have an apparently decent '96 9K.
The '94 seems to need a bunch of relatively minor stuff, but the master cylinder is $400 from eEuroparts. A fan motor is $64. The controller is $151, but you might find a used one at a pick and pull yard. (I got one for $10 that way). If you do indeed need an AC compressor new and rebuilt ones at eEuro range from $450 to $800. BTW, If the ACC on the '94 is dead, the one from the '96 won't work as it is ACC 2 (plastic case) the other is ACC 1 (metal case) and I don't think they interchange. Others here may know better.
On a car like the '94, I'd also be wondering what's going to die next.
If you fix the '96 you have a car that's a bit more of a known quantity. The salvage title is really no biggie as it's a 13-year old car that's going to be a tough sell anyway if you dump it in say, 2 more years.
Next, you have limited space to work on the car, and say you're a novice DIY guy. In that situation it's better to fix the car you know--the guys who do the tranny will do all the work--and you'll have your car back. Sell the '94, which will certainly take awhile, and put the money toward the tranny work.
Just my $0.02.
