I agree with your analogy except for one point. As pads wear the piston extends to compensate, and the rest of the hydraulics adapt. When the brakes are applied, the distance the piston travels from rest to engage the pads does not change through the life cycle of the pads.

My point with respect to the pressure plate is that as the clutch disc wears the finger angle increases and it takes more axial distance to engage the clutch. On an adjustable cable clutch , you have to keep lengthening the cable as the clutch wears to maintain free play. Hydraulic systems compensate, but I still think the travel increases. I think a lot of hard to engage reverse problems are due to a combination of this and sketchy hydraulics.
