Sludge issues continue at LEAST through then, but they (apparently) finally settled on a PCV fix that works to prevent sludge as of the 2003 model year.

I had a 2000 V6 wagon (okay, no sludge issues there, actually a fine reliable engine in most respects. But utterly crap fuel economy!) and I found the seats to be uncomfortable. These are the standard, non-Aero seats, of course, but those seats didn't appear until 2003 either. The Aero seats are great.

The four cylinder Saab engines took a pronounced and critical dive in longevity starting with the NG900. Oil pumps, the aforementioned sludge, dying turbos, the list goes on. After my NG900 sucked up debris through the oil pump and killed itself two weeks after I finished fixing it up, I am resolved to avoid any Saab but a 9000 from here on.

If I did entertain the idea of another non-9000 Saab, it'd have to be a 2003 or later 9-5 Aero wagon. Even then I'd have to check it over carefully to make sure it doesn't have the HVAC mixer flap problem, the bent rear subframe problem, various security system problems, failed cat, dead DI cassette (availability of which is lately a problem for 9-5s apparently), or a host of other "isms" common to 9-5s.
