Your description of the "snapping" feel suggests the joint itself has been damaged due to lack of grease.
At this point you'd be well advised to replace the axle, which, as Yaofeng points out, will end up saving you money if you have someone do it for you. It will also save you time if you do it yourself.
Follow Yaofeng's recommendations for torquing the new axle nut, and make sure to replace the nut when doing the job.
Do a search of the archives for plenty of writeups on the procedure!
