you should know a thing or two about the system you're so quick to criticize. The 9000 TCS system does not apply the brakes. It uses information gained from the ABS wheel sensors to detect wheel spin (different wheels speeds reported at different wheels) to decide to reduce engine power. The whole electronic throttle thing (fly by wire) is needed because the throttle needs to be closed in order to reduce engine power. So, those "clever setups" you speak of are simply the natural progression of refinement in systems like the 9000's.
If I'm wrong and the 9000 TCS systems actually don't interfere with the throttle body but applies the brakes, then please accept my deepest apologies.
Personally, I think that fly by wire can be properly implemented, and I also think that both brake and throttle are reasonable items to control in order to optimize power delivery and even brake/steering inputs. I consider myself a good driver, but I know that I'm not better than today's advanced TCS systems. I am, however, better than my 9000s TCS system as it's just not very good.
Now, the reason that TC systems on the 9000 are often feared is that the system is often very difficult to fix due to the multiple layers of ECU control. I have heard of otherwise good cars being scrapped because the owner and mechanic can't get to the root of the problem. Many people on this board have learned a great deal about the system and can be a huge help to those with a badly behaving TC system. A badly behaving TC system can make a car wholly unpleasant to drive. It seems that some cars end up with chronic problems, while others remain trouble free for years.
As the owner of a TCS 9000 (Aero) for over 85K miles, I have never once had a problem with it. Sure, I wonder if it'll act up one day, but I also wonder if I'll get hit by a garbage truck the day before that happens.
If given the choice between two otherwise identical 9000s, I'd take the one without TCS. As my previous purchase decision shows though, TCS would not be a deal breaker for me.
