I had a rear wheel bearing replaced in my Audi A4 (four wheel independent suspension) and while doing so the shop messed up the alignment, car was pulling violently to one side. The shop did a four-wheel alignment on their laser machine "to specs", made it even worse.

Years earlier I found an alignment specialty shop that did a superb job on my Alfa - all they do is alignments, highly regarded on many car enthusiast websites and in the local racing community. I took the A4 over there and they straightened it out at my expense. Before they started doing anything, their setup procedure includes calibration/correction for bent wheels (most older cars have some bend in their wheels!), which may have been the key to their success. My guess is that at least one of the shops that you are using does not do this, which would account for some major differences between visits and between shops. You are probably also correct that shops don't recalibrate, the shop that I used says that they do so periodically.

That said, I usually do the alignment on my 9000 (with my kid's help) using some brads and a tape measure - the only readily adjustable setting is toe, -1.5mm is a measurable/repeatable amount, and I know how I like the steering to feel. This seems to be working out well, tires wear evenly, car handles and returns to center as it is supposed to.
