There's different usages of the word calibration, and I should clarify what I am talking about. I mean a certification of accuracy/uncertainty that is traceable to national standards. The type of calibration you describe sounds more like an self calibration. While this can be important as well, without some kind of external verification there's no way to know whether the self calibration, or any measurements made for the alignment, have any validity. If their calibration uses standards that are periodically sent out for certification, and the purpose of their calibration is to verify the accuracy of the machine relative to those standards, then that's a different story. I think it would be very interesting to query a sampling of shops on their understanding of alignment measurement and measurement in general.
