The 0w40 is thinner when cold than the 10w30, which is good. The problem with all grades of motor oil is they're too thick when cold. That's the reason why most wear occurs while the engine is warming up to operating temp. 0w30 is thinner than 0w40 when cold, too bad you can't find it. 0w20 is thinner still when cold, but without an oil pressure gauge you won't know whether you have enough oil pressure at operating temperature. By "enough oil pressure at operating temperature" I mean 10 psi per 1,000 rpm as a rule of thumb. If anyone out there is running Xw20 and has a pressure gauge, I'd like to know about the pressure readings after the engine has been run 30 minutes or so.

In the XXwXX oil grading, the digits before the w matter more than the digits after the w.

I Don't know what year you're driving. My '96 with 2.3 turbo is compatible with XXw30 and XXw40 per the owner's manual. It recommends 5w30 as a good winter grade to improve starting, and it probably would have recommended 0w30 if that was available when the car was made. The 0 before the w is your engine's friend.

The operating temp of your oil in the dead of winter at Chicago should be the same as it would be in a heat wave at Miami. The 40 after the w isn't a big problem after the oil reaches operating temperature, although the flow would be faster (resulting in a cooler engine that lasts longer) if you have a 30 after the W. But what will wear out the engine over time will be the oil's thickness before operating temperature is reached.

I'll let someone else comment about trans oil.
