But beware you're getting into ocd territory which is my dubious forté.
It makes sense that 0w30 and 0w40 would have the same viscosity when cold. The problem is that oil doesn't make a lot of sense. For example:
Viscosity when cold (75° F)
0w20 - 40 cSt
0w30 - 50 cSt
0w40 - 60 cSt
cSt is an abbreviation for centistoke, a measure of viscosity. The grading of oils isn't as precise as we would all like it to be.
Higher viscosity may be better in worn engines (wear is the key, not the age of the engine). Or maybe not better. Like our arteries, oil passages accumulate deposits that can restrict the flow of oil. Doctors prescribe blood thinners, and maybe our worn engines need thinner oil. Without a pressure gauge we can only guess.
For now I'm running 5W40 Rotella T6 also. I like the robust old school additive package in T6. That said, I'll be doing homework soon on 0W30 synthetics, hoping to reduce engine wear and maybe get slightly better mpg.
