I'm referring to the thing in the picture below. The one that I just replaced is on the left side of the car, so no curbs involved, they just deteriorate and break apart over time here in the rust belt - I've done all of them at least once. Who had the terrible idea that cast aluminum is appropriate in this location?
I gave both bolts a solid "pull" on the handle of the box end wrench, but the suspension was still rattling around when I drove. Put a torque wrench on the nut of the front bolt and it quieted the suspension down, now looking to do the rear bolt properly (pulled it a bit tighter for now).
Why I'm a bit "gun shy" about cranking this bolt with a large amount of raw force: I recently replaced the rear wheel bearings on my friend's Mini and while torquing the wheel bolt (17mm head vs. 16mm on the suspension bolt, similar diameter bolt) found that one just would not tighten properly. The reason was that someone overtorqued the bolt and stretched it - once stretched it will easily keep stretching, never reach torque spec, and eventually break (I backed off before that happened). The front bushing bolts on the SAAB 9K would be painful to replace if broken or stretched as they are inserted before the engine/trans unit.
