Nylon locknut on strut Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 08:53:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My question boils down to which nut should I use and how should I tighten it.
Background:
The nylon locknut at the top of the Saab strut is a nonstandard 14 mm x 1.5 nut. What makes it nonstandard are its height and outer diameter, which fits a 13/16" socket.
This nonstandard nut can't be bought anywhere. Somebody please correct me about this if I'm wrong and name a source.
The Bilstein HD strut ships with a standard 14 mm x 1.5 nylon locknut that has a 22 mm outer diameter. It fits either a 22 mm or 7/8" socket.
Hoping to use the standard nut, I ordered a 4491-A socket made by Sir Tools. It is a 22 mm socket that can be used with a torque wrench. It has a large cutaway section where a 7 mm Allen wrench can be inserted. Very clever, except that it won't fit through the 1-1/4" diameter hole at the top of the SKF strut bearing. The outer diameter of the socket at the widest point is slightly less than 1-3/8".
Which option would you go with?
1. Re-use the Saab locknut, guess the torque, and hope it will hold.
2. Use the new standard locknut and enlarge the hole in the strut bearing. My concern here is getting bits of metal into the bearing that will shorten its life.
3. Grind down the 4491-A socket until it will pass through the 1-1/4" hole. Then install the new standard locknut. Can't think of a downside to this except it will be a royal pain to do.
4. Install the new standard locknut with a 7/8" socket turned with a pipe wrench and guess the torque.
5. Any better ideas you may have.
