Thanks everyone for the good advice!
I got a green light from Oliver at Sir Tools to modify the socket. He said it was plenty strong enough to work after grinding down, and he even kept the modified socket under warranty.
So I decided to try, figuring I'd use the oem nut with blue loctite if the mod didn't work. Sparks flew (safety glasses a must for this) as I worked the socket on a bench grinder with the coarse wheel. It works!
Oliver said the socket was originally designed for O2 sensors. Then some mechanics told them how handy it is for VW/Audi struts. He plans to make a slimmed down version that will work with struts like ours with the nut recessed inside the strut bearing.
I'm taking blurry cell phone pictures and making notes as I go. I'll post a strut writeup when time permits.
