my Duracool experience thus far... Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
My '94 Aero has had poor A/C since before I got it; the compressor would cut out, it had the tiny pinhole leaks typical of a 134a system, and keeping it in any sort of usable condition has meant topping it off every couple of weeks all summer long since I got it.
Yes - I've tried locating the leaks - and no, they are not findable because like most 134a cars the aluminium has been eaten by the corrosive refrigerant and it is peppered with microscopic leaks.
Time to move on from this depressing stuff now:
I dropped about $100 into getting Duracool, and it's proved itself - thus far...details:
My car - according to their conversion chart needed 2.5 cans of it and I also got their super-duper leak sealer stuff, which has about 1/4 can of refrigerant in it.
I did not need to get a 'kit' or their dryer formula because I have my own gauges and a (wonderful, BTW) venturi-type vacuum pump.
For my source I used I.A.A.D. in Pennsylvania - who took the order via phone and shipped it to me quickly.
There are very few dealers for this stuff in the US and they have a list with contact info on their site at:

I vacc'ed the system down 2x - dumped in the 1st can (sadly my fill line had a bad seal so it lost a bit for me before I caught/fixed it) - put in the can of sealer after the compressor started, and then did as I was told and charged it 'till the low side showed 38 PSI - waited to see if it was stable, and took a drive.
My all black car, in full sun, quickly gets over 100F inside even on a 70-ish day.
There I was - on a 75F day and in full sun - with an outlet temp right around 50F (WAHOO !).
The next time I used it the thermometer showed 107F when I started it, and in a few minutes time it was down to 54F, also in full sun.
I waited a couple weeks before posting about it here and last evening, after pounding rain it was quite steamy outside - but cool and dry inside my Aero - and still my outlet temp is right close to (or lower than) 50F.
A bit of a funny too-> my local Biglots had R134a last summer for $5/can, and they had a whole shelf of it right into the wintertime - then it vanished for some reason...
(In case anyone hasn't heard - 134a is all done and as a result it's prices are rising.)
Identical-looking 134a has re-appeared mysteriously at Biglots now - and is in their circular strangely enough...a special sale item ?
At a 'mere' $8/can. Too funny.
(I seem to recall that re-pricing existing stock to higher prices used to be illegal, but maybe there is a way to un-shelf and re-shelf things that exempts that rule.)((The petrol folks do it daily - that's for sure !))
Anyways, back to my A/C tale - based upon what I've experienced thus far Duracool is not only a winner - but is here to stay in any car of mine for sure - and if I get a whole summer out of this SINGLE charging, I will be completely thrilled.
