I just wanted to follow up here since I mentioned the EnviroSafe electronic leak detector that sells for $50 which is supposed to be able to detect HC refrigerants. (I want to be sure anyone searching for the info will find out what the real deal is with this thing.)

The EnviroSafe web site clearly lists this device as being able to detect HC refrigerants. However, when I received it all that the instructions mentioned were halogen-type refrigerants such as R12, R134a, etc. Not a word about HC. Testing, I found it would sniff the former refrigerants OK, but not a peep when exposed to EnviroSafe or Duracool.

So I sent an email to EnviroSafe asking for a return authorization since the unit did not perform as advertised. Their response was that "It is, in fact, able to detect leaks for hydrocarbon refrigerants.  We only
sell hydrocarbon refrigerants and it works with all of our products."

They suggested that perhaps the detector was defective and that I should test by blowing air across it. (!!) It did detect air movement, so I wrote back and pointedly asked if it "detected" HC refrigerants indirectly via air movement caused by a leak. I received a one-word answer: "Yes."

I really don't consider this acceptable, as the device does not actually detect the refrigerant itself but only air movement that a (large!) leak would cause. By their reasoning, it could be claimed that this detector will respond to virtually any gas.

So strictly speaking, by their definition it does "detect" HC leaks, but not in the manner one would expect. I strongly suspect that this thing will be useless for detecting all but the largest leaks of HC refrigerant, and that it will still be necessary to blend in some R134a to use it in a meaningful way. (I already had a detector that could do that!!)

Caveat emptor!
