Pickle forks ruin the rubber boot on the ball joint end. Use the two hammer method:
Loosen the castle nut until it's flush with the top of the threaded portion on the ball joint.
Hold one big hammer firmly on one side of the knuckle and then use another big hammer and strike the knuckle on the opposite side of the stationary hammer.
Presto! The impact loosens the ball joint and it pops out. The castle nut prevents damaging the thread and controls the joint.
Also, Autozone has the tie rod removal tool for free rental.
