I have had three oil pressure senders fail by leaking, due to either a cracked plastic body or the crimp between the metal case and the plastic body loosened up (plastic shrunk?); the fourth just stopped working and failed in "off" mode, indicating that the pressure was OK (not a good failure mode). These are not precision parts and weird things can happen.
The fact that the pressure does build up over time does indicate some other failure.
