Another way to have more filtration between changes is to install a longer than standard filter that has the same 3/4" hole size, 16 threads per inch and 8-11 psi bypass filter.

Reasons not to do this:
1. It is not necessary (overkill).
2. It will probably void the warranty if you try this on a newer car.
3. It is a modification which requires more thought and research than just going with a standard oil filter.

Reasons to do this:
1. It slightly increases the engine's total oil capacity (very slightly).
2. The larger surface area provides more oil cooling, assuming you don't get too close to the exhaust downpipe.
3. More filter media to catch more debris, so the filter is less likely to become clogged and bypassed.
4. More filter media results in less restriction to the flow of oil through the filter.
5. Less restriction means the bypass valve should remain closed longer as rpms increase.
6. Oversized filters have received engineering support in other makes. For example, Chrysler's 2.4 liter engine (found in the PT Cruiser) is available with and without a turbo. The non-turbo gets a Purolator PL10241, the same filter that fits the Saab 2.3 liter engine. However, Chrysler's turbo version gets a Purolator PL20195. These filters are identical except that the PL10241 is 3.36 inches long and the PL20195 is 4.74 inches long (41% longer).

I have not necessarily listed all of the pros and cons of this alternative to changing the filter between oil changes. I am not convinced that changing filters between oil changes or installing an oversized filter are necessary or beneficial for the way most people drive cars. I struggle to imagine either strategy making a significant difference in a used oil analysis from a competent lab in the absence of extreme operating conditions.
