Put quality synthetic oil in the engine with a good quality filter.
Drive 5,000 to 6,000 miles.
Repeat.
Have the oil analyzed if you're especially curious about wear... or if you're a bit anal.
The key thing is using oil that meets the specs stated in the owners manual, a good filter, and changing both around 5-6K. Changing either more often just costs money with no appreciable return.
My '96 9K had dino oil for the first 7 years of its life, changed every 3,000 or so. Went to synthetic when I got it at 91K. That was 110K miles ago. A couple changes went as long as 9,000 miles but most were around 6K.
My '99 9-3 had dino oil every 3K for 138K miles. Switched to synth then. Now at 175K. No issues.
The newly acquired '00 9-3 had synth every 5K all its like. Now at 198K. Drips a little, needs 1/2 quart around 4K miles.
My wife's '03 9-5 had synth or semi-synth all its life, every 5K. Is the only one that uses any oil between changes that aren't drips on the driveway.
