No, it think you're absolutely right. Our engines are not known for valve-train wear, nor piston/bore wear, which is what it would really help with.
More likely problems come from 1) sludge from over-used dino juice due to heat and acid degradation (too long an interval) and 2) insufficient viscosity in hot weather.
The B235 with its lighter ring tension had a lot of issues even with good synthetic, with sludge caused by the acid products of blow-by. The earlier engines did not have these issues.
Also it's worth noting that not all synthetics are created equal. Some are more durable than others, some are thicker or thinner than others at a given API rating, some have better buffering (higher TBN) to handle acids absorbed during extended drain intervals. There are at least three basic classes of base-stocks, with different performance and durability characteristics (and expense), these being in order of expense and quality: hydrocracked petroleum (not legal to label as synthetic in europe), PAO, and Ester.
