Today fitted a fresh regulator/brush unit KAE (german made according to labels.. bought from EEuro a couple years back)
Always dreaded the Install. So I procrastinated.. a lot.
Turns out it's Reasonably simple to re and re the VR unit 'in place' .. 1 1/2 hours of fiddling. OEM was a Bosch unit, made in the UK. Gratifyingly I found it's brushes down to 1/3 length... so it actually was time for a replacement
Worryingly the New VR thing doesn't 'ignite'... (reach charging threshold) until 2500/2700 rpms.. NOT GOOD.
Previous one was at 1400/1500 rpms.
Is this a break in issue ?? Seriously unlikely. But worth hoping :-)
OR is the stoopid thing Eff'd from the get go.
Before the .. 'you missed a wire' chastisements. All wires (including the green /white Exciter one) are present accounted for and undamaged.. and in the exact position they were initially.
Possible?? the grn/white 'might' be loose at it's other end... Wherever That might be?? Suppose it could be damaged. But as car has 120K miles and relatively pristine, so doesn't seem probable.. But??
Where is it's other end So I can at least meter for continuity?
I can ( likely will) wander over to the local Auto Electric shop and get either 'another' VR module (this one with a warranty.. grrr) Or a fresh Alternator.
Don't relish the thought of swapping in a fresh alternator though.
Unless absolutely necessary.. Too much work TBH.
Help ?
