There should be a resistor that provides excitation current to the alternator when the bulb is burned out, but of course it's possible in nearly 25 years that the resistor has deteriorated as well.
Be sure to closely examine the connector on that little green & white wire. A while back I thought mine was good when I was having alternator problems but on closer examination that wire was corroded even though it didn't look that way. Just wiggling the connector made it break off.
There are other internal problems that can develop in an alternator aside from worn slip rings. If you have a good auto electrical shop available they should be able to check it out for you.
