Axle replacement not so bad a job Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Wed, 29 Mar 2023 14:29:05 In Reply to: Re: Best method of R&R drive axle, skibumm100 [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 29 Mar 2023 05:44:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Aside from all the grease and grime, replacing the axle was pretty straightforward. The only problem was that the axle nut just would not budge even with a 3' breaker bar and cheater pipe. It was like King Kong must have tightened that thing. So I had to use my impact gun on it. I don't think it put too much strain on the bearing, the nut started moving with the first impact and then came right off. The impact gun also made quick work of removing the strut-to-hub bolts.
No puller was needed. The splined shaft pushed out pretty easily with just finger pressure. The new axle is installed now so things just need to be buttoned up, tighten up the inner boot clamp and all the bolts. I put the old axle aside since it appears to be perfectly good aside from the outer boot. I'll have to replace the boots and put it aside as a spare.
Not nearly as bad a job as I'd feared. Took a couple of hours and I can believe if one got good and practiced the job could be done in 45 minutes to an hour. Next up, worn outer tie rod end...
