If you replace the oil pump O-ring, I think you lose less if the oil is drained. I was replacing the oil level sender o-ring at the same time, so I had to drain it.
Removing the main seal is easy if you decide to do the oil-pump O-ring at the same time. The main seal is in the oil pump, so you just pull the oil pump off, and the main seal comes with it. Pressing it out at that point is cake.
The starter motor method took at least 12-15 whacks for me. I was getting a little worried, but I figured that time was on my side. It is indeed on there tight. I'm glad I had the torque wrench, as the proper setting is far more than I would have felt comfortable with doing 'by feel'.
I'll have to go back and see what my socket was 30 or 32. I took no chances and measured it up with a vernier caliper, as no matter what I'm told by others, it's my butt stuck there on the cold floor in the garage, with the hardware store closed.
