I have always carried a fire extinguisher in my cars. I have used them twice, each time on other people's cars: A Renault 5 Turbo that had an oil leak on to the exhaust manifold that was about to burn the under bonnet insulation (Yes I am a Brit!) and the other on another Renault 14 that had engaged its started motor and was draining the battery rapidly whilst trying to set the electrics on fire.
If it a really big fire then walk away and leave it to the professionals.
If you have to lift the bonnet (hood) beware the flash over/fireball (also the lack of air cooling efect when the car is staionary).
But wouldn't you just kick yourself if you lost your pride and joy because you didn't have a fire extinguisher to hand to put out a little flame that grew and burnt the whole vehicle out. How annoying would it be for the cat to set fire to some dry grass on a summer's day and destroy the whole car?
I would say that $20-30 of fire extinguisher was very good insurance. If you don't use it then most manufacturer will recharge it for 1/2 price after 5 years.
As a submariner I have fought fires for real:If you hit the fire fast and early you will kill it easily. If you let it get hold it will kill you!
