When my engine caught fire last year (Sven, 1990 9000S) I borrowed an extinguisher from a nearby factory unit, opened the bonnet (hood) and let rip. Worked fine, and no flare-up presumably because I had cut the engine first. But I don't think there are hard and fast rules about this and opening the hood might have led to real problems. So what do you do - run and hope the fire puts itself out? You might destroy the entire neighbourhood. On balance I would do the same again (especially as the insurance paid out).
